Kovai S Jayaraman - Pushpanjali 2009

Swami Gnananandaphoto of Swami Gnanananda

“To obtain [the Sat-Guru’s] grace the disciple should be the embodiment of service; like Satsang and Iswara pranidhana [surrender to God] it brings the mind under subjection and helps one to achieve one’s objective very quickly. Loving service to the guru is very important for attainment of wisdom.

Only one who serves the spiritual master, says the Swami, comes to possess the wisdom that is taught by him, just as only he who digs with a spade gets water. There is nothing in this world which cannot be attained with the anugraha or favour of the guru.”

Sadguru Gnanananda, His Life, Personality and Teachings, by His Devotees (Bombay: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, 1979), p. 109.

The gift of Gnanananda

COURTESY: http://haridasgirigandhi.blogspot.com

The first memory of Gnanananda is of Him at ‘Narayana Bhavanam’ at Tapovanam, some time in the mid sixties.

The sage was giving darshan to members of a guided trip to His ashram. I was with my mother as part of a group.

Mother was worried about her growing hearing disability, but her affinity for the Sage was such that she wanted to communicate with Him then and there.

What she asked and the details of His reply are lost to me, but the details of the scene and that I acted as interpreter are in the memory.

Would the sage have known then that mother would cast off her physical burden at His feet, and that He would come personally to bade her good bye…something that saints who have given up all attachment rarely do.

``She has become one with the Nityasuris, ``(celestials who wait upon Sriman Narayana at Paramapada), the sage would say in appropriate Vaishnavite terminology to our family members.

The solicitude he showed to the bereaved, in particular to the youngest (that happened to be me), was extraordinary. He was a sanyasi and a sage, but was so caring. Every day he would call me to his presence and load me with fruits.

A few months later, the Sage would himself shuffle off that wonderful physical frame of His, that singular mien of compassion and affection….but how much love and lustre, hope and heavenliness he had radiated all around!

How can a broken sieve retain the placid ocean of ananda that the Sage was, is and will be?

Just a droplet perhaps of that ocean is enmeshed in the web of life and fragmentarily reflects the glorious sun of Gnanananda in the heart of its variegated existence.

Flitting images of the light of lights leading the Deepajothi at the break of dawn…

Of still afternoons when Thapovanam was in reverie, but the Sage was out instructing construction workers...

Of the Sage in whose Heart the thousand suns of the Vedas shines, quoting by heart long-winding verses from Thayumanar---Kandhuga madhakariyai vasamaai adakkalaam…

Strangely, it never occurred to me that this extraordinarily caring and human sage, was a human being like one of us…

He was, as the defining sloka so uncannily summed up…the Bhakta vaatsalya jaladhi …the ocean of affection to his devotees… Paramaananda vigrahaa…the very form of divine joy.

That such a sun of gnana walked through the alleys of our congested existence…

That the sea of love harboured at our shores with its endless waves of compassion..

That the heavenly bird which flits its mystical wings in the skies of satchitananda nested for a while in our dinghy hearts to intimate to us our heavenly destinies…That was our gift and our joy.

Birth after birth, if need be…

Century after century, if they coursed on…

Infinite if our steps in the winding trails of samsara..

His hand of help shall be our guide and protector....

The cool shade of His presence shall be the oases in the deserts of duality…

O Gnanananda …who wrote the poem of thine life?

What heavenly minstrel sang the lyric of thine presence?

``Make no mistake’’, my mother said of her guru. ``Swami is Krishna himself’’.

Whom should this vagrant vagabond soul thank for taking it to the groves of His presence?

Who else but Radha and her Consort!

The years that it in frolicked in the limpid waters of the Pennai that runs by Tapovanam and partook of Gnanananda’s prasad, are the most significant years of its life. The ‘Rosebud’ it cherishes forever.

WHAT IS MAYA - AS EXPLAINED BY OUR GURUNATHAR

Bhagwan Krishna and Narada were going in a forest. After travelling a distance, Krishna felt thirsty. He asked Narada to fetch Him water. Narada went immediately to get water.
Narada reached a village nearby and knocked the door of a house and it opened. Behind the doors stood a beautiful lady, with attractive eyes. She was equal to celestial Ramba in her beauty. She enquired in her sweet voice, "who is knocking the door?" Narada, on seeing the beautiful lady, forgot the purpose of his visit. He talked various things about love but did not whisper about water. Sun began to set, yet Narada was going on with his conversation with the lady. Narada stayed in that village that night. Next day, he visited that lady and he became very friendly with her. Days rolled on. The Magnet, attracted the needle well. Love blossomed. It ripened and ended in a marriage. They led a pleasant married life and three children were born to them. Thus 12 years passed and father of the lady died. Narada got his properties too. He was very happy.
Later, on a day, there was a big flood. The river broke its banks and the village got immersed in water. Cattle persihed. Men and women were washed away by the floods. Narada wanted to escape with his wife and children. Both took the children and crossed the floods. The child on the shoulders, slipped into the water and washed away in the floods. Narada wanted to save the child from the floods and in that process, let the remaining two children out of his hold and they were also washed away. He cried aloud and held his wife firmly fearing that she will also be washed away by the floods. The floods, fury did not abate and washed away his wife also. Narada was left alone. He cried to his breath and was totally shaken.
At that time, a hand touched his shoulders from behind. Narada turned and there he saw Bhagwan Krishna. He asked Narada "What happened to you. Where is water. I have been waiting for you over half an hour".
Narada replied expressing surprise: "Krishna, I had spent 12 years now after leaving you, and my mind tells me so. How is it that all these happened in half an hour ? Krishna replied smilingly "Narada, once you asked me what "Maya" is? Now you understand what it is. That is 'Maya'.
"Yama Sa Maya". That which is not is Maya. Brahmam alone exists. In other words 'THAT WHICH EXISTS IS BRAHMAM'. The rest is illusion or 'Maya'. Narada understood what is permanent or Nithya Vasthu.
Adhi Shankara says that 'Maya' is "ANIRVACHANIYAM" (Cannot be expressed). It is neither "Sath" nor "Asath" ( Neither Truth or Untruth ). Whether exists or does not exist. When the shell twinkles, one feels for a moment that it is silver. When he goes near to that, he finds that was an illusion. A rope is mistaken for a snake when viewed from a distance. On going near it, you get the knowledge of its true nature. Mirage is also comes in the above line. Even for a person who knows that Mirage is not water, yet he sees water in Mirage.
In all the above examples, once you get the true nature of things, you get to understand that what you said earlier was an illusion or untruth. If the original appearance is fine, it should remain the same all the time. It is not so.
Therefore the eternal truth is 'PARAMARTHIKA SATHYAM'. 'Vyavaharika Sathyam' is one in seeing appearance as true in day-to-day life. 'PRATHIPASIKA SATHYAM' is appearance of certain things as true for a short period. Once you get true knowledge both Vyavaharika and Prathipasika Sathyams will reveal as illusions.
In the example given above, 'SNAKE' is 'AROPYAM', 'ROPE' is 'ATHISHTHANAM'. If Athishthanam becomes true, Aropyam will disappear. We think that this world, which is a Vyavaharika Sathyam as true and on gaining true knowledge, this Vyavaharika Sathyam will disapear. So long as you live in the material world, the world is really true. Once you get the vision, the world will become an illusion.
Sadhguru Gnanananda explains easily 'Maya' thus :
"There is no answer as to where and how this 'Maya' came to existence. If you ask darkness as to how it came, it will not disappear. You bring a light, then darkness goes. It is not possible to enquire into the origin of Maya. Once you get light, the darkness of ignorance disappears. It should come to you of your own experience and effort'.

PARAMAHAMSA PARIVRAJAKAACHAARYA JAGADHGURU

COURTESY:http://www.xomba.com/about_gnanananda_giri

After Mahasamadhi of his Guru, Swami Gnanananda Giri became the peetathipathi of Jyotir Mutt. Swamiji did not show any interest in Peeta & nominated Swami Ananda Giri, as his successor and started out to the high Himalayas for undertaking intense penance. Swami Gnanananda wandered high into the snow-covered mountains of Kashmir, Nepal and all over the Himalayan range & met several yogis. The sages of Himalayas performed rare kayakalp treatment to him & inserted special herb in to a vein of his fore arm. It is the obsolete method of preserving the body in health and vigor for more than 100 years for performing extreme spiritual penance in harsh climatic conditions at higher altitudes.

After long period of spiritual discipline, meditation and Samadhi, swami Gnanananda traveled extensively on foot, spanning the whole of India
, Tibet, Nepal, Burma and Sri Lanka. He stayed in the famous Shri Lankan Shrine of Kathirgamam for 60 years. In Tamilnadu itself sage had stayed for more than a hundred and seventy years in various places - Kalpattu, Kolli Malai hills, Polur etc

Return to Tamil Nadu

Finally, Sri gnanananda returned from travel & established ashrams at Attyampatti, Siddhilingamadam, and Dalmiapuram and at Yercaud (Pranavanilam). In 1940 Swamiji shifted to Siddhalinga Madam situated at about six miles from Thirukoilur on the southern bank of the river South Pennar. In 1951 the sage moved to Gnanananda Thapovanam on the northern bank of the river. He called the ashram an Adhyatma Vidyalaya. His teaching was pure Vedantha, the timeless message of the Upanishads.

In his ashram at Thapovanam, Swamiji constructed separate shrines for the deities of GnanaGanesa, GnanaSkanda, GnanaPurisa, GnanaAmbika, GnanaMahalakshmi, GnanaVenugopala, GnanaAnjayeya, GnanaBairava, Durga, Navagraha and Chandikeshwara. Swami gnananandagiri was well versed in all the modes of bhajana sampradaya. According to him the Hari Bhajana was the easiest way to attain `moksha. He had moved closely with spiritual gurus such as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Aurobindo, Seshadri Swami, Vallalar, Shudhananda Bharati and Ramana Maharshi.

Mahasamadhi of Great Guru

Sri Gnananandagiri attained Mahasamadhi in January 1974. As per his instructions he was laid to rest in a hexagon-shaped Samadhi chamber constructed by him a few years earlier. Even though Jeevanmukta has shed the limitations of the physical body, his presence in Videha Kaivalya has become all prevailing.

OUR GURUNATHAR'S EARLY LIFE BEFORE RENUNCIATION

Sri Gnanananda's life Prior to renunciation

Swami Gnanananda's Purvashram (life prior to renunciation) is surrounded by mystery. In fact, his age itself is beyond one's estimate. It is believed that he lived more than 250 to 300 years.

It is believed that that Swami Gnanananda was born long ago at Mangalapuri in the North Kanara district to an orthodox Brahmin couple Sri Venkoba Ganapatigal and Smt. Sakkubai. The child was named as Subramanya. At his young age Subramanya did not show interest in formal education. He was indifferent to external things of life and deeply absorbed in knowing thy self. At the age of 12 Subramanya followed a divine light and reached Pandharpur. There, he had a divine darshan of Lord Panduranga and-Rukmayi. It is in this place boy met his Guru, Swami Sivaratna Giri of Jyotirmutt, one of the four mutts established by saint Adi Sankara.

Sri Sivaratnagiri Swamiji judged his spiritual depth and accepted him as his disciple. Boy was duly educated in "Ashtanga Yoga, Hindu scriptures, upanishadic truths etc. Subramanya was given "Sanyasa" and was named "Sri Gnanananda Giri."

TAPOVANAM

Sri Gnanananda Thapovanam meaning, "forest of penance is a place of pilgrimage established by Swami Gnananandagiri. It is located on the northern bank of the river South Pennar (also called Dakshina Pinakini), 3KM away from Tirukoilur, on the Tirukoilur - Tiruvannamalai highway, Tamil Nadu, India.

Tirukoliur is the famous vaishnative pilgrimage center where presiding deities are Ulagalanda Perumal (Thiruvikrama Swami) and Pushpavallithayar.This. It is one among the 108 Divya Deshams for Vaishnavas.

There is also an ancient Shiva temple present in tirukoliur. Here Lord Shiva is called Veerateshwarar who is worshipped in the form of a Swayambhu Lingam. It is believed that hallowed grounds of this temple are the birthplace of "Vaasthu Purusha". Legend Says that Saint Avvayar herself has worshiped Lord Muruga and Shri Ganapathy of this temple and she reached Kailas directly from here with the help of Lord Ganapathy It is believed that Maharishi Mrigandu undertook penance at this holy place, having cluster of five old mango trees.

Swami Gnananandagiri identified this place for its spiritual potency and established his ashram here. Finally Thapovanam became his regular living place until he attained Mahasamathi in the year 1974.Shrine was constructed over his "Samadhi. We could feel his divine presence even today.
